‘The Ache of Being’ follows our 2019 EP, ‘The Ever Present Elephant’ and continues to tackle similar themes, from global issues to those closer to home.
We have taken the opportunity to try new things, explore different sound textures and to find the right instrumentation for each piece, exploring harmonies and rhythms.
We hope The Amber List sound, high on melodies and harmonies against a backdrop of driving guitars and rhythms, shines through on this new collection of songs. We hope it still sounds like us?
The creative process was a truly 'local' one.
All credit to John Kettle @TMP studios for his advice, ability to tease out the detail and clarity from our varied sound palette and his ability to tell us 'no'.
We would like to say many thanks to Matt at Yeager studios for his support and skills in the initial recording of the album.
Cover art was created by Nick Rhodes @Switchopen. Nick has created artwork for artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Elbow, Fleet Foxes, The National, Queens of the Stone Age and The Flaming Lips to name but a few.
Sleeve design was created by long time collaborator and friend of the band Stephen Caton @Source Creative. Stephen is an award winning designer and has an extensive client list, working with the likes of Creative Lancashire, Patrick Grant and local legend Wayne Hemmingway.
The band formed in 2017 in Preston, Lancashire with Tim and Mick playing original folk songs together. Once joined by Tony and Simon, the sound broadened to a classic four piece indie guitar sound peppered with harmonic interludes and touched with atmospherics.
It is a sound all of their own.
Think Teardrop Explodes, Echo and the Bunnymen and the La’s, crossed with The National and Fleet Foxes, with a hefty helping of The Smiths.
All members of the band have flirted with the limelight, with previous releases on Virgin and Action records and supporting the likes of The Stone Roses, Gene, Hard-fi, The Saw Doctors, The Cleaners from Venus and Bronski Beat.
This from poet Paul Cookson:
“Perfectly pitched, deftly mixed and immediately accessible, their songs feel like old friends you haven’t seen for ages, or best friends you haven’t yet met. Familiar and warm, but different and alive. High on melody and hooks, understated and all the more powerful for that.”
Mick Shepherd: Lead vocals, guitar, bass
Tim Kelly: Guitar, vocals, bass
Tony Cornwell : Guitars, bass, atmospheres, vocals, racket
Simon Dewhurst: Drums, percussion, vocals
